What if You Worked Here?

What if you worked here?

You arrive for work in the morning, turn on your computer, and discover much of your work has been done for you.  You greet your colleagues and receive a hearty welcome.  Your team consists of several hundred industry-recognized subject matter experts, yet you are never forced to sit through a single planning meeting with them.  No one knocks on your door or comes by to share the latest gossip about your boss.  There’s no discrimination based on your looks, religion, race, sex, marital status, car you drive or size of your house.

You receive almost unlimited invitations to try the latest and greatest technology tools.  You are encouraged to be creative.  When you make a mistake, your team mates step up to the plate and provide solutions for cleaning up the mess.  If you miss a day of work, someone else picks up the slack without complaining.  you receive valuable feedback on your work and are asked for your opinion on the work of others.  Your competitors share their trade secrets.  You receive credit for your hard effort.  Others know your talents and interests and consider you an expert in those areas.  You have the opportunity to support others in their creative efforts, without the responsibility of managing their work or monitoring their productivity.

When you have a question, you receive expert answers in seconds.  You don’t have to know everything there is to know about your field, because your team shares the load and you know someone in your group has the knowledge you are seeking.  If you wear mismatched socks, no one notices.  You are never overwhelmed by the perfume from the next cubicle.  You don’t have to sing “Happy Birthday,” and chip in for cake every time a colleague has a birthday.  No one cares if you show up late or leave early.  You can share personal stories, hobbies and jokes without worrying about HR investigating the appropriateness of your actions.  Your team keeps working, even when you are asleep.

What if you worked here?

You can.

Build your social network, and this will be your workplace.

I was working as usual at my dining room table in London, thinking about just this when I saw your tweet and came to read your post. The social networks really are an important part of my workspace. Without them I’d feel like a lone, and slightly crazy voice :-) Maybe I am a bit crazy, but my twitter network is starting to feel like a Community of Practice and the main place I learn.
