Bringing The Network to a Job Interview

I don’t know if this has been done before, but I plan to invite “The Network” to a job interview. I will be using Google Docs and Spreadsheets, Presentations to design my presentation and present with attendees in the chat room. I will be interviewing on Friday, October 5th between 2:00 and 3:00 PM PST. My presentation is only 10 minutes, and I do not know when it will be delivered within that time frame. I hope to find a handful of Twitucators to sign in and hang out and backchannel. I was asked to speak on how I would implement an expanded Distance Learning plan for the college. My goals with this experiment are to:

  1. Easily design a presentation that is hosted online with little effort
  2. Demonstrate a potential Distance Learning tool
  3. Show the value of The Network

If you are interested in supporting me, please set up a Google account, if you don’t have one already, and visit http://docs.google.com/Present?docid=d89zt3t_0dvtcps between 2 and 3 PM PST on October 5th. Feel free to discuss the slides, hopefully in a positive way! Right now, I am still working on the presentation and you are welcome to give feedback.

There are many potential problems:

  1. No audio so the attendees won’t know what I’m talking about. I will try to make the slides as clear as possible.
  2. Presentation is only 10 minutes long, so I may not have time to interact with the chat room.
  3. Since I am openly publishing this, my competitors for the position could sabotage my presentation.
  4. Technology may not work. I’m always prepared for this, because it’s quite common in the tech business!
  5. Out of control chat.

I thank you in advance for your participation!

    Jen,

I’m excited to see how this turns out. With only 10 minutes I suspect the best case is that you can demonstrate how easily you can tap into an online learning network, which is sure to be an asset to the organization. I highly doubt #4 will happen, but certainly that risk is the flip side of such openness. I, for one, applaud your risk taking. :)

I would recruit a chat captain to monitor the chat room and perhaps deal with any “trouble” or at the least maybe facilitate a discussion on a particular topic. If you leave the chat room just open, yeah, it’s a chat room. If you give the chat room a topic, such as “What does the future of distance education hold in light of the new free web 2.0 tools cropping up”, then you might get a solid discussion that might interest your folks, and you are a leader instead of reacting to the chat room.

And yes, nice job with this idea! Keep us posted!

Thanks, Chris! I do have one person committed now, who can keep an eye on the chat. I am also going to include a section on each slide for the “backchannel.” If I have time, I will provide audio! If not, I will just include some extra text for discussion. I’m trying to think of it as if I were teaching a DL class. That way I can model what I’m preaching!
