What if we All Modeled Leadership?

This morning I passed a church billboard admonishing, “Children need models, not criticism.” I thought it was a nice sentiment and pledged internally to scold my children less today. Then I remembered I owed a blog post today and started to think more about the sign. When you attend a college of education, you become saturated with examples of modeling: model the use of technology, model good writing, model appropriate classroom behavior. Rarely do we extend this instructional technique outside the classroom and into our daily lives.

With all the press coverage of the upcoming elections, we are bombarded with criticism of our leaders. We have the chance to develop the leaders of the future. What if we model exactly what we want in a leader? What if, instead of criticizing, we model the behavior and performance we expect from those around us? Try extending this into your day to day existence.

  • Do you expect your students to clean up after themselves and show respect for your classroom? Do the same in your home and other places of business.
  • Do you want future leaders who are caretakers of the environment? Do your share to go “green.”
  • Do you want to hear the truth in political campaigns? Make it a practice to be truthful in your social interactions.
  • Do you feel unappreciated by your students? Show some appreciation for the services you receive.
